It’s a full count, which wouldn’t normally be a problem but Sellers walked the batter to load the bases. Called in to clean up a mess, Sellers’ room for ever narrowed from slim to none. A rarity in his sport, Sellers was the hard-throwing lefty with nerves of steel. He was a sure thing, ever since high school. The fact that Sellers would be facing a left-handed batter – increasing the pitcher’s chances at success – only served as confirmation to the skipper that a change on the mound was the right call. At the plate now, though, was a power-hitter; a right-hander at that, and while his splits are insignificant, Caruso was the one batter Sellers always had trouble mowing down. The decision had to be swift, sudden and early. In a full-count, Sellers wouldn’t even need to consult his catcher. Strike-zone can be tight, like fitting an elephant into an ant-hill, but sometimes all it takes is a little power. Fast-ball down the middle.
